About
Hi, I'm Mischa
HelloMaker came out of fifteen years of casually exploring education, schooling and learning through an alternative lens, and out of being a parent to two young people of my own.
In the context of HelloMaker I like to introduce myself by saying that I’m first and foremost an unschool dad to two fantastic young people.
Technology is now one of the biggest forces shaping how young people relate to each other and to the world. I’d like them to be able to shape it back.
With this project I get an excuse to explore and tinker with technology in a playful way that I hope keeps my own interest in it alive longer than my work as a creative technologist otherwise might.
I come from a long line of teachers and have worked as a mentor with young people before. As a creative technologist who has been working with tech for 20 years, and an unschooling parent myself, I understand both the technical landscape and the real concerns parents have about their children’s relationship with technology. I’m still working this out for myself and my family and I’m here to help guide both young people and their parents through it.
What I’m still working on
It’s early days for HelloMaker but the ideas and some of the content have existed for many years and I just need to build the momentum to put more of my time into this. Alongside the program and the vision of a Mobile Makerspace, these are the things I’m building out:
- Testing different delivery formats for the content
- Turning Learning Prompts, a sister project under Open Campus, into a tool for others
- A course for parents on confident, conscious technology use

If you think HelloMaker could work for you or someone you know, let’s yarn. I read everything that comes in myself.
